Volvo Penta is synonymous with innovation and a never-ending quest to develop more efficient and sustainable power solutions. At this year’s Seawork, exhibitors are privy to its new D13 IPS Hybrid propulsion system which it aims to bring to market later this year.
The fully integrated hybrid-electric platform is built on the company’s proven Volvo Penta IPS technology, with the new system representing a major step forward in delivering a complete helm-to-propeller solution. By combining propulsion, electric motors, batteries, energy management and controls into a single, cohesive package, it is designed to reduce complexity for vessel users. James McPaul, Technical Sales & Application Engineer for Volvo Penta is at Seawork this week talking to the large number of interested visitors on the stand. He explained: “This year we’re launching the marine commercial variant of the latest D13 IPS hybrid platform. What that means is we are showing that we can add an electric motor onto the existing D13 diesel engine and are coupling this with our efficient IPS drive.”
At sea, the system allows the user to select between electric, hybrid and crossover modes. In pure electric mode, vessels can cruise quietly at low speeds, dock with precision and anchor in near silence. Alongside a reduction in noise, vibration is also dramatically reduced. Furthermore, high-capacity batteries also power onboard amenities without the need for a generator. The D13 IPS Hybrid is compatible for use with HVO100, a renewable paraffinic fuel that can reduce emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional diesel. In addition, the system has a compact aftertreatment system that complies with IMOIII, the toughest emission legislation.
Volvo Penta’s approach includes clear, ambitious sustainability targets. “Quality, safety, and environmental care have always been our foundation. Today, these values drive our journey toward more sustainable power solutions on land and at sea. By collaborating with partners who share our vision and being honest about our progress, we're building a future where business success and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand,” says Anna Müller, President of Volvo Penta.
McPaul picked this up on the Seawork stand: “Every year at Seawork we promote a new product or a new technology. We're looking to raise awareness, not just for our new D13 hybrid system but for any system that can ensure that we protect our environment.
“We are a strong believer of the blue ocean concept. We want to preserve our environment as much as we can and do this by focusing on the most fuel efficient, cleanest diesel technology we can, coupled with efficient drives to transfer that power on the water.
“Our latest innovation means that alongside our three exhaust systems, we can also add in the electric motor technology, which gives us the opportunity to operate emissions free. This is obviously great for the environment but also the wildlife within that environment as we can drastically reduce our noise output.
By offering a complete hybrid electric vessel propulsion solution, including propulsion, batteries, energy management and controls, Volvo Penta reduces the need for multiple suppliers and streamlines the entire build process.
Volvo Penta has been a familiar exhibitor at Seawork over the years and it is a key event in the company’s calendar. McPaul concludes: “In my opinion, it's the biggest marine commercial show in Europe. A lot of our customers are here, and it's the highlight of my calendar.
“For us it’s the perfect platform to make announcements and showcase our innovations.”
