Marine Travel completes difficult plan to the Bahamas

Many companies – shipowners/managers, equipment suppliers and service companies rely upon specialised travel companies to get their personnel to places where needed. One such company is Northern Ireland’s Mivan, a specialist cruise vessel outfitting company, which uses Canterbury-based Marine Travel. A recent project proved how useful Marine Travel is, in times of need.

Dave Thompson, Managing Director of Marine Travel said, “One of our long standing customers, Mivan, came to us with, what seemed at the time, a normal travel request for a refit crew of 11 - flights to Freeport, Bahamas - two weeks in advance.

"On further analysis we discovered that the refit crew had no US visas, meaning we had to avoid all flights via the US, thus cutting the number of options down considerably. Additionally, a school holiday departure date and all the refit crew having to travel from various countries all to arrive in the Bahamas at the same time, caused added problems. With low availability, this was certain to be a challenge. Sourcing the best possible one-way marine fares using our extensive negotiated airline contracts, we were able to book flights and therefore tickets were issued, along with the marine eligibility letter for the group, to travel via St Maarten. 

“But Mother Nature had other plans and threw a hurricane into the mix, grounding flights and causing major disruption within the Caribbean area. With our continuous 24/7 service, Mivan and our reservation team worked efficiently on new flight options and arranged hotels to guarantee the team could still arrive at Freeport to meet the vessel, thus ensuring Mivan were still able to meet their customers’ requirements. Original tickets were refunded and new itinerary was approved.

"The tools and equipment needed to complete the refit were lost at sea. The whole trip was in jeopardy and nearly cancelled. However, we were able to arrange last minute flights for the Project Manager into Miami for new tools to be purchased and then a connecting flight to Freeport."
