Mecal approved as new certifying authority for ROUVs
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) continues to expand the roster of organisations able to certify remotely operated unmanned vessels (ROUVs).
Mecal Ltd, an MCA Authorised Certifying Authority for small commercial vessels, has now been formally approved to undertake certification of ROUVs, in accordance with Workboat Code Edition 3 Annex 2.
Approval follows an MCA assessment of Mecal’s technical capability, experience, and established assurance processes in the evaluation of ROUVs, including remote control and emerging maritime technologies across commercial and specialist sectors.
As the UK maritime sector continues to evolve through a range of innovative vessel projects, the MCA is working to safely and efficiently integrate ROUVs into commercial operations.
The approval of competent organisations to support certification activity is a key element of enabling innovation while maintaining high safety and environmental protections.
Mecal’s ROUV certification approval represents a further step in supporting the development and deployment of remotely operated technologies within the UK regulatory framework.
Operators, designers and developers of remotely operated vessels are encouraged to engage with authorised organisations at an early stage to ensure a clear and effective certification pathway under the Workboat Code.
