Louise Sara

Fleet Captain: Director - Maritime Standards

Carnival Corporation & plc

About the Speaker

In 2000, Captain Louise Sara commenced her maritime career as a deck cadet with P&O Cruises. Her passion for the industry grew as she gained experience and navigated through various roles. In 2008, she took a pivotal step, transitioning to P&O Ferries as a second officer. This move allowed her to strike a balance between her burgeoning maritime career and her responsibilities as a mother to two boys.

In 2013, Louise etched her name in maritime history. Her exceptional skills and determination culminated in her appointment as the first female and youngest captain by P&O Ferries on the English Channel. As she took the helm, she navigated the Dover-Calais short sea route, demonstrating her competence and paving the way for more diversity within the industry.

The year 2018 marked a significant advancement in Louise's journey. Assuming the role of Senior Master, she ascended to a leadership position that enabled her to shape operational strategies and policies. Her influence extended beyond her immediate responsibilities, impacting the broader maritime landscape.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought unprecedented challenges to the maritime sector. Undeterred, Louise’s dedication remained resolute. She embraced the role of Fleet Manager - Safety at P&O Ferries. In this capacity, she spearheaded crucial projects aimed at enhancing the safety culture, refining reporting mechanisms, and improving communication methods.

Louise's impact extended beyond her corporate roles. She was the chair of the Vehicle Deck Safety Working Group at the UK Chamber of Shipping. This role culminated in the launch of the 10 Golden Rules of Vehicle Deck Safety in late 2021.

In December 2021, Louise embarked on a new chapter, joining Carnival Corporation. Assuming the dual responsibilities of Fleet Captain and Director of Maritime Standards, she continues to drive progress and innovation within the industry. Her dedication to fostering diversity and empowerment is evident through her establishment of the Women Officers Network within Carnival Corporation.
