Marine business Level 3 apprentice teams are set to compete in real time to produce a fully working electrical system at the BMEEA (British Marine Electrical and Electronics Association) Apprentices Competition to be held this year at Seawork .

Up to twelve teams will take part in this year’s edition of the annual competition which will take place on the morning of Thursday 15 June during Seawork’s Training and Careers Day.

Participating teams are from a range of companies and organisations including Sunseeker, the RNLI, Cobra Ribs and Platinum Marine. Ian Lewis, Weidmuller’s Sales Development Engineer, will set the task and carry out the judging.

Derek Gilbert, Chair of the BMEEA said, “ I am absolutely thrilled that the BMEEA is able to support the apprentices and delighted that so many teams are going to participate. We are especially pleased that this annual competition is taking place on Training & Careers Day at Seawork highlighting apprentices as the future of our industry.”

The winners will be announced on the day at Seawork and will also be invited to attend the BMEEA Annual Conference in October.

Seawork is working with Maritime UK and the Solent LEP to deliver an exciting careers event
promoting Maritime careers this year. The commercial marine industry is an attractive, multifaceted sector which needs to maximise the promotion of its career opportunities to attract trainees and graduates.   Maritime offers a wide range of different job opportunities and is always seeking to expand the skills base of existing and future employees.

With a focus on skills, learning and employment, the Training & Careers Pavilion is open on all three days of Seawork, gives visitors the chance to explore opportunities within the commercial marine industry. Exhibitors include specialist recruitment companies, education centres and training organisations, many with apprenticeship schemes, all offering expert advice on how to start and maintain a successful maritime career

Exhibitors come from all sectors of the industry and can show the huge scope of roles available, both on the water and shore based, for people with or without qualifications. They can also offer advice on the schemes and help available to enable young and not so young to get on to the commercial marine job path.

Over 150 students and young people aged between 15 and 19 will attend Seawork from local schools / colleges / training centres / universities to see first-hand what a job in the commercial marine industry could look like and to gain some valuable insight on the opportunities available.

Students will attend two dedicated Careers events, taking place in the Seawork Conference Rooms. The students will then be encouraged to tour Seawork, speaking to exhibitors, visiting the pontoons, going onboard vessels and taking part in a video competition with an opportunity to win some great prizes.

“Commercial Marine has Talent”, a live showcase of people working in the industry will see speakers from across the sectors, selected specifically to appeal to the audience and to allow the young people to actively engage in assessing whether a career in the industry is for them. Expect upbeat presentations and some lively questioning - “how they got to where they are, why the job is so amazing, what are the career and salary prospects.”
