Actisense, the marine electronics and NMEA specialists based in Poole, United Kingdom, has unveiled a free-to-download eBook entitled "The Ultimate Guide to NMEA 2000® Networking".

The publication is aimed at boaters and fleet managers who currently use NMEA 0183 networked equipment onboard and want to upgrade to NMEA 2000 without the costly exercise of replacing all existing kit onboard.

Given that NMEA 2000 allows for much greater flexibility and data transfer speeds over 26 times faster than on NMEA 0183 networks, the protocol’s popularity is easy to understand.

The Ultimate Guide details the simplicity of adopting the NMEA 2000 protocol by creating hybrid networks, meaning that existing talker and listening devices (including MFD’s, chartplotters, AIS, GPS, transducers, etc.) can remain onboard thanks to the smart technology in the company’s award-winning NGW-1 NMEA 2000 Gateway.

The eBook helps to clearly outline everything required in setting up and NMEA 2000 network, and points users to key resources.

Actisense CEO, Phil Whitehurst, commented: “Our technical team have put this eBook together following hundreds of technical support enquiries about adopting NMEA 2000 onboard. There seems to have been a misapprehension that all existing equipment would need to be changed too, in order to benefit from the protocol. There’s certainly a simpler and much more cost effective way to achieve that. The speed and flexibility of using the NMEA 2000 protocol onboard is within easy reach.”
