‘With courage, nothing is impossible’ and so it proved today for the two apprentices from the RNLI who won the Seawork Marine Electrical Apprentice & Cadet Competition.
It was the workmanship of Sam Clark and Lewis Mackrell that saw them at the head of the 17 teams taking part. Second place went to Mason Fenn and Bradley Venn-Griffiths from Sunseeker with Knight Marine’s Harry Cooper and Alfie Webb a very creditable third.
The technical battle takes place in real time with the task for teams of two apprentices set on the day itself. Apprentices and cadets alike need to exercise their design, calculation, and wiring up skills (taking current standards into account), before implementing the all-important ‘does it work?’ test.
This year saw the traditional qualifying cohort of Level 3 apprentices expanded to include Level 4 cadets and apprentices for the first time.
The Seawork Marine Electrical Apprentice & Cadet Competition was sponsored by British Maritime Training & Assessment (BMTA). Founded in June 2023 by Richard Broden-Cowell and Owen Davies. BMTA are Specialist Lecturers, Trainers & Assessors in Marine Electrical, Electronics and Marine Engineering.
Special thanks go to Paul Holland of Energy Solutions who provided the test rigs, set the task and was also one of the panel of judges. Thanks too to fellow judges Keith Longman of Berthon and Ian Lewis of Weidmuller UK.
Congratulations to all the apprentices who took part in this year’s Seawork Marine Electrical Apprentice & Cadet Competition – your industry is privileged to have you!
