Damen Shipyards Group has unveiled the SOV 7017 E, the fully electric Service Operations Vessel (SOV) for offshore wind farm maintenance. With a length of 70 meters and offshore charging capabilities, it marks a significant step towards emissions reduction. To address the challenges of offshore charging, Damen partnered with MJR Power & Automation, developing a motion-compensated gangway system controlled from the wheelhouse for safe and efficient connection to turbines or substations. The charging occurs in a low-power DP mode, ensuring energy efficiency. The vessel's 15MWhr lithium iron phosphate battery enables a full day of operations, with the option of conventional diesel propulsion during power shortages. The vessel's design emphasizes safety, efficiency, and sustainability, presenting a collaborative opportunity for shipbuilders, operators, and wind farm developers to advance offshore energy production sustainability.
