DAME award for U-Safe

Demonstrated at Seawork 2018 and distributed by Ocean Safety, the U Safe auto-propelled and remote controlled life-saving device has received the highest accolade at METS this week.

The U SAFE not only won Lifesaving and Safety Equipment category but won the DAME Award for 2019 outright.

The DAME Design Award jury found its attention increasingly drawn to the clever design execution, innovation and safety implications of the U SAFE, a reinvention of the traditional life-saving ring that is auto-propelled and remote controlled. Featuring robust, understated and very clean design, the U SAFE can be from boat or shore in line of site at speeds of up to 15kph, for a duration of 30 minutes.

The design incorporates completely flush jet drives and sensibly large rigid grab holds, as well as an easy-to-access u-shaped area to swim into. The U SAFE offers the promise of enhanced lifesaving options not only for casualties in the water, but also for rescuers. Its 13kg weight, robust construction and size means it can be deployed on larger leisure boats and superyachts but it has obvious wider applications too for those operating marinas, boat yards and other waterside facilities.

Summarising the Jury’s decision, the U SAFE is a perfect example of how accepted norms in the products we use can be examined and improved by great design effort.
