Marine engineering specialist to chair Hybrid Propulsion conference

Alan Cartwright, Director of Blabey Engineering Ltd, is to chair the Hybrid Propulsion conference at Seawork 2020. Delegates to the 2019 Hybrid Propulsion event gained real insight into operating hybrid vessels and the session evoked in-depth debate on future opportunities, 2020 will see the latest developments come under scrutiny.

Alan Cartwright started his career serving in the Royal Navy as a specialist in surface ship marine engineering; his sea appointments included Deputy Marine Engineer in frigates and seabed operations vessels, and technical command as Senior Engineer of HMY BRITANNIA. His last RN appointment was with Superintendent Ships, Portsmouth, where he managed several warship refits.

Post RN, Alan was appointed the Head of Marine Engineering to the Port of London Authority where he ran the PLA’s operational fleet and dockside equipment, and conceived, designed and built a number of innovative patrol and marine services vessels.  He followed this as Commercial Manager to Warsash Maritime Academy.

Alan is now Director of the maritime consultancy, Blabey Engineering Limited and is a Principal Surveyor for the Certifying Authority MECAL Limited. He is also a Fellow of the IMechE and the IMarEST, for which he chairs the Institute’s Small Ships Group.

Alan will be joined by speakers Tom Binns, Sales Manager - Marine & Industrial Transmissions Ltd (MIT), and Graeme Hawksley, Managing Director - Hybrid Marine Ltd.

Tom has a strong background in mechanical power transmission solutions within varying markets, from marine to agriculture and automotive; providing him with a unique understanding of the challenges and demands of different driveline arrays and how these power requirements translate into de-carbonisation projects.

Graeme has over 40 years’ experience in the marine, aviation and silicon chip industries. Hybrid Marine Ltd has been developing and manufacturing hybrid systems for 15 years. Graeme has a detailed understanding of the marine environment, holds a MSc in Hybrid Technology and three patents. The first parallel hybrid was brought to market in 2007 (the first of its type) and Graeme has been developing improved systems ever since.

The second of two Seawork Commercial Marine Conferences for 2020, the Hybrid Propulsion conference takes place on the morning of Thursday 11 June. To see further updates to the programme and list of speakers, click here for more details.
