Netherlands-based Damen Shipyards Group has signed a contract with the Lithuanian Navy for a Pollution Incident Response and Search and Rescue (SAR) vessel.
Based on Damen's OPV 6711 platform, the new multi-role 67.3-metre ship will support pollution response, search and rescue and wider maritime security operations in the Baltic Sea. She is set to replace an existing unit in the Lithuanian Navy’s fleet, bringing several emergency response capabilities together in a singular platform. Her primary role will be pollution incident response, supported by a FiFi 1 firefighting system and DP1 dynamic positioning.
The vessel has two davit-launched SAR boats that can accommodate 50 survivors and have facilities to administer medical care and treatment.
The vessel's large deck holds up to six 20-foot, 15-tonne containers and a helideck.
Damen says the vessel's modular design allows the Lithuanian Navy to adapt its platform for a wider range of missions, adding flexibility. Potential applications include unmanned systems, mine countermeasures, hydrographic surveys, diving support and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. With a top speed of 23 knots, she will also feature Damen’s Sea Axe bow and its ice-class 1D hull designed with Baltic conditions in mind.
29 October marked the formal signing of the contract, following a procurement process organised by the Environmental Projects Management Agency.
