Rebel Marine has installed 515m² of Versadock pontoons beneath a railway bridge in Dorset, UK, providing temporary access for a major scaffolding project.
The installation on the River Avon was carried out for Southern Renewals Enterprise, with the pontoon system supporting scaffolding works on the railway bridge. Once scaffolding was completed, the pontoons were relocated, with a pontoon walkway installed to provide access between the two sides.
Restricted site access and a low bridge presented logistical challenges, according to Matthew Randall, managing director at Rebel Marine. To combat this, it was necessary to deploy a combination of specialist lifting and handling equipment to transport and launch the pontoon sections.
To navigate the low bridge, Rebel Marine used a pickup-mounted crane to lift pontoon sections off delivery trailers, reducing their transport height. A compact telehandler then moved flatbed trailers beneath the bridge, while a spider crane lifted the pontoon sections into the water.
The three machines operated in a coordinated relay, enabling the team to transfer equipment between both sides of the railway before assembling the pontoons on the river.
