Alan Murphy has a professional background as a dual-qualified sea-going officer in the British Merchant Navy, complemented by academic training in Naval Architecture and Experimental Hydrodynamics. His research in maritime engineering focuses on the development of sustainable and emission-free ships, ports, and wider maritime systems. His areas of expertise include net-zero propulsion and energy systems, ship emissions reduction, energy efficiency technologies, and the use of real-world data to enhance the design and operation of ships and port infrastructure. He is also engaged in advancing autonomous maritime systems, as well as contributing to indices, policy, and regulatory frameworks for the sector. Alan is the UK Standing Committee member for the International Symposium on the Practical Design of Ships and other Floating Structures (PRADS) and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Maritime Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights. In addition to his research, Alan teaches maritime machinery and propulsion systems, as well as thermofluids.
