Fraser Sturt is a Professor of Archaeology and Director of the Southampton Marine &
Maritime Institute. He specialises in the generation and integration of complex
interdisciplinary datasets, with a focus on maritime cultural heritage, marine spatial planning
and environmental impact assessment. He directs the AHRC RICHeS Coastal and Inland
Waters Heritage Science Facility which hosts cutting edge national assets for seabed and
riverine survey. His current research includes UKRI funded work on potentially polluting
wrecks (Wreck Assess) and resilience of coastal communities (Coast-R). His research has
contributed to the generation of the first UK wide record of maritime cultural heritage sites
through development of AI tools for spatial data (Towards a National Collection - Unpath’d
waters) and methods for automated detection of underwater infrastructure and features.
