Collaboration of skills, technology and a shared passion to develop and protect the future of young people working in the marine industry has resulted in Scottish-based Ocean Kinetics and MMG Ocean, located in Ireland’s largest fishing port, becoming one of the first organisations to deliver results on a joint agreement between the Irish and Scottish Governments. Powering Prosperity outlines the MOU between the two bodies to boost cooperation in the development of offshore renewable energy.
MMG Ocean partnered with Ocean Kinetics, which has bases throughout mainland Scotland, Orkney and Shetland in 2023 to combine their resources in designing, manufacturing and delivering engineering solutions for the marine sector, including innovative and award-winning gangway solutions to enhance personnel safety on and off boats, piers, marine structures and within harbours and ports.
“We’ve become one of the first companies within Ireland and Scotland to actually deliver on the MOU for development of clean energy with our patented and innovative gangway access systems,” says Managing Director Martin McGuinness. “And to achieve this, we are very focussed on creating and supporting career pathways for young people in the marine sector.”
Both organisations actively recruit apprentices, providing them with the opportunity to work in Ireland and Scotland. This opportunity to travel is key, says McGuinness, as previously many apprentices would, on completion of the programme, leave for countries such as Canada and Australia. “Being able to offer them the skills and opportunity to grow and stay within the marine industry in Scotland and Ireland is really important for the future of the marine sector,” concludes McGuinness.
