The hull of the first sailing cargo ship built for TOWT is on her way to the Piriou yard in Concarneau to receive her rig and sails.
Constructed by Piriou in Giurgiu, Romania, on the banks of the Danube, the recently launched vessel is currently crossing the Med under tow and due in at the French yard by the end of August.
The environmental impact of maritime freight transport has become a major concern for sustainable development, with cargo vessels deemed responsible for a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and disruption of marine ecosystems.
TOWT (TransOceanic Wind Transport), a pioneer in the field of clean energy for commercial shipping, has made an unwavering commitment to eco-responsibility, combining the heritage of sailing with modern technological advances. It is calculated that the sail-assisted vessel will produce a carbon footprint of less than 10% of that generated by a ‘conventional’ cargo vessel on a transatlantic route.
