CAREERS & TRAINING

FINANCE, INSURANCE AND LEGAL
The UK plays a leading role in maritime insurance, finance and law. There are many and varied careers opportunities in these sectors, including sales and business development, IT, administration, accounting, legal, underwriting, regulation and compliance, and asset management – all with the added benefit that you are dealing with interesting assets connected with the sea. Here you can find more information on working in marine finance, follow the links for Insurance and Legal.
Roles
Finance - companies who own and operate workboats, other vessels and shore-based marine assets often need financial assistance to purchase them. They do so by getting loans from finance companies or banks, similar to a mortgage on a house. In the UK there are banks who specialise in providing finance in the maritime industries.
Qualifications and Training
Going to university is not the only option if you want to work in financial services. Many successful financial services professionals join straight from school and work their way up.
If you are willing to work hard, show initiative and want to learn, there will be opportunities.
To be in with a chance of the best opportunities you will need to have basic skills, so you will need at least a grade 4 GCSE in English and Maths.
Salary Brackets
Salaries vary but starting salaries are usually around £22,000 - £25,000.
Colleges/Universities
Most financial services companies now expect potential recruits to have already gained a degree before considering them for graduate training or fast-track schemes. It is not vital to have a maths degree, but most will expect you to have at least a 2:1 in your chosen subject.
Financial services companies also offer graduate training schemes, where you undergo further training and in some cases are expected to study for – and obtain – more qualifications, before being offered a permanent role. Details of graduate training schemes can usually be found on the career web pages of financial services companies.
