CAREERS & TRAINING

INSURANCE

Marine insurance covers the loss or damage of cargo, or damage to ships, ports or terminals. It also provides protection for goods during delivery, when transported via other means to and from vessels.

Unlike car insurance, which is taken out by private owners, marine insurance relates to commercial activities and can also include insurance for fishing vessels, marinas and harbours, and tradespeople who carry out work on vessels.

Marine insurance offers many job and career opportunities including an insurance broker, an insurance underwriter, an insurance claims handler, account manager and a risk surveyor.

In addition, marine insurance companies require support roles such as Marketing, Digital & Communications, People/Human Resources, Finance, IT team – Technology, Data & Security, Risk Management and Compliance.

Qualifications and Training

Most Insurance companies offer training schemes for school leavers or after a degree course.

Employers often prefer to take on trainees with a minimum of GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), including English and maths, and A levels. IT skills are also important.

You would usually start in one of the following jobs:

  • insurance technician
  • junior account handler
  • trainee broker

You could work your way up to broker as you get experience and insurance industry qualifications, for example, through the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII).

The CII qualifications offer study units relevant to the insurance areas you specialise in, for example marine, commercial or general insurance. Examples of qualifications include:

  • CII Level 3 Certificate in Insurance - for trainee brokers
  • CII Diploma in Insurance
  • CII Advanced Diploma in Insurance

If you have a degree, you could join a large insurance broking firm's graduate training scheme.

Most degree subjects are accepted, but a business or maths degree may give you an advantage, as there is often a lot of competition for places.

 GOOD TO KNOW
You could get into a job as an insurance broker through an insurance professional higher apprenticeship. This typically takes about 24 months to complete with a mix of workplace learning and study.
Intermediate apprenticeships
Intermediate apprenticeships are the entry-level apprenticeship for those looking to make a start in the world of work. Available to anyone from the age of 16, with no maximum age limit, they’re also a great option for anyone looking to make a career change. You’ll need five GCSEs grade A*-E/ 3-9 including Maths and English, as well as a Science subject to apply for an engineering or technical role, or two National 4s including Maths and English (or equivalent).
Advanced apprenticeships
You can apply for an advanced apprenticeship if you have five GCSEs or National 4 (or equivalent), including Maths and English, as well as a Science subject to apply for an engineering or technical role, or you’ve completed an intermediate apprenticeship or similar Level 2 qualification. They’re full-time roles, with a competitive salary and they’re a great way to develop specialist skills.
Higher apprenticeships
Higher apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 18 who is looking for an alternative to attending university. You’ll need at least five GCSEs or National 5 + Highers (or equivalent) including Maths and English, as well as a Science subject to apply for an engineering or technical role. Additionally, you’ll require a minimum of two A levels or a level 3 equivalent qualification.
