Work is underway to protect Polperro’s iconic inner harbour with main contractor Teignmouth Maritime Services Ltd (TMS) on site.
Constructed in Polperro, Cornwall, UK in 1860, the Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall Pier – known locally as the Prince of Wales Pier – has withstood many years of notorious Cornish storms, leaving it in very poor condition and urgently in need of substantial work.
TMS are strengthening the existing structure and constructing a concrete jacket on the seaward faces as additional protection. Secured by anchors, the concrete jacket will ensure the Prince of Wales Pier can withstand future storms and continue to provide essential protection to Polperro’s iconic inner harbour, fishing boats and flood gate.
The £2.1m restoration project is funded by £1.4m from the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme, £450,000 from the Environment Agency, £49,000 from the South West Regional Flood and Coastal Committee Local Levy, and £55,000 from the Polperro Harbour Trust, which is managing the project as owners of the pier.
Working platforms have been erected adjacent to the Pier and in the inner harbour. Equipment and materials have been delivered by sea with the remainder through the village and transported by raft through the Harbour.
Work is expected to complete in the Spring of 2025.
