Explorers 'return' to the Antarctic

Two new 'crew' have joined their 77m explorer mothership bound for Antarctica. Named 'Shackleton' and 'Scott', 'for rather obvious expeditionary reasons' according to the builder, the port and starboard coloured Rafnar 850 RIBs are the latest tactical and adventure support boats from Rafnar UK.

The vessels can perform multiple roles from transporting guests to carrying supplies. Centre console layouts are fitted with twin Ullman jockey seats and removable bench seating for a further 11 passengers and are equipped with state-of-the-art, networked, WASSP sounder systems to relay detailed information back to the mothership.

A single Volvo Penta D6.440 mounted under the console running on jackshafts to Volvo Dpi drives offers comfortable cruising speeds up to 30 knots and a top speed in the region of 40 knots in most weather conditions. Folding rear arches make for easy storage. Custom folding chocks enable quick launch and recovery.

Rafnar’s unique new hull form was originally designed to protect crew from the damaging effects of slamming at high speed in heavy weather, attracting tactical users and Search and Rescue teams. Verified by the University of Iceland’s Independent Wave Slamming Research, the same qualities were an easy transfer to the private adventure market with the boats now used by adventurers and explorers the world over and found on some of the world’s most exclusive vessels in the most remote locations.

Building on the original Icelandic heritage of unrivalled seaworthiness, stability and comfort, Rafnar UK Limited is part of the Rafnar Maritime Group and the exclusive UK licensed builder of the unique Rafnar range.
