Nusrat Ghani MP is WISTA UK’s very first Patron, accepting the role at a landmark moment for the association.
Nusrat, the former Shipping Minister and current Chairman of Ways and Means / Senior Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, takes on the newly created role at a landmark moment for the association, achieving a record membership of just under 700 professionals across the maritime sector. The appointment comes at a time when UK maritime is grappling with both a skills shortage and increasing pressure to decarbonise, challenges WISTA UK argues require not only recruits but stronger retention, driven by a more diverse and representative workforce.
WISTA UK Woman of the Year in 2024, Nusrat has been a longstanding advocate for maritime, sustainability and diversity. Nusrat said, “WISTA UK plays a vital leadership role in championing women across the maritime sector and ensuring the industry reflects the skills, talent and diversity Britain has to offer. I am honoured to become its first Patron and look forward to supporting its continued growth and impact.”
As Minister, she led the development of the UK’s Maritime 2050 strategy and strengthened Britain’s role in shaping global shipping regulations. The creation of the Patron role marks a new strategic phase for WISTA UK as it prepares to expand its policy engagement, mentoring activity and industry partnerships.
WISTA UK President Monica Kohli welcomed Ghani’s appointment and emphasised the organisation’s historic membership growth, “Reaching almost 700 members shows the depth of talent and the appetite for change within UK maritime. Appointing Nusrat as our first Patron reflects our commitment to ensuring women’s voices are heard at the highest levels of the industry.”
Membership momentum has been fuelled by expanding leadership programmes, mentoring networks, and increased collaboration with maritime bodies, all of which aim to strengthen pathways for women at every career stage.
