İzmir Shipyard, in partnership with Portuguese firm Seapower and the University of Coimbra, officially announced the groundbreaking IZ 1540 HDPE Electric vessel today. The innovative project is being showcased this week at Seawork.
The IZ 1540 is set to be fully electric, zero-emission, designed with sustainability and efficiency at its core. The vessel is to be constructed entirely from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), offering exceptional durability, reduced environmental impact, and compatibility with renewable energy sources. She will also be 100% recyclable.
Developed for operation in Portuguese waters, the vessel features a 100% electric propulsion system that delivers silent operation, lower maintenance requirements, and enhanced energy efficiency. The IZ 1540 is a real-life step toward greener maritime practices and supports the broader transition to a blue economy in Europe.
The new vessel turns the spotlight on İzmir Shipyard’s advanced manufacturing capabilities and Seapower’s deep expertise in clean marine technologies; a powerful example of how international partnerships can drive innovation and accelerate the adoption of sustainable maritime solutions.
Due to be delivered in Summer 2026, the IZ 1540 will take up her post in the 28m-deep-water Port of Sines, the largest artificial port in Portugal.
