On the day before Seawork opens, Speed@Seawork saw more than 60 attendees meeting in Southampton to join the Ocean Scene vessel to enjoy breakfast and business briefings, sponsored by OSI Maritime, for the voyage across the Solent to the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes, Isle of Wight.
An escort of high-speed vessels showcasing at the event accompanied the Ocean Scene, demonstrating some fast manoeuvres along the way to the defence and specialist sector delegates on-board.
Sam Sears, National Shipbuilding Office (NSO), spoke about the role of the NSO that oversees all of the Government's interests in UK shipbuilding, supports growth in the sector, and works with industry to improve productivity and competitiveness.
“Decarbonisation and green tech is at the forefront of the shipbuilding agenda and that is why we established the UK Shipping Office for reducing emissions, called UK Shore, which has £216m worth of funding to make sure that Britain can get ahead in the environmental game” commented Sam.
Sam finished by talking about the Zero emission vessel and infrastructure (ZEVI) launched by UK Shore, as well as the need for a skills agenda in shipbuilding in the UK. On arrival at the Royal Yacht Squadron delegates had the opportunity to go out on trials on the various vessels and view the exhibitors pop-up displays in the pavilion whilst overlooking the vessels demonstrating their specialist capabilities on the water. After a delicious lunch the delegates listened to presentations from Phil Gittens, Boats Team Leader at Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) who gave an update on the UK Ministry of Defence OD Small Boats Programme, and John Haynes, MD of Hybrid Marine Power, who took the audience through the reality of implementing Net Zero in this specialist sector in his presentation 'Energy transition - gathering pace for high-speed craft'. After the opportunity for more sea trials in the afternoon, the day ended with canapes and drinks on the return journey from Cowes to Southampton Speed@Seawork 2023 vessels were exhibited by:
