Congratulations to Emma Maunder, the Workboat Association Apprentice of the Year.
Emma passed her two year Marine Workboat Apprenticeship earlier this year, completing her studies and final assessment with a Distinction, and is now employed as a Harbour Operative by Cattewater Harbour Commissioner.
The award for Workboat Association Apprentice of the Year was a surprise so, as Emma was enjoying a pre-booked well deserved holiday, it was her parents who collected the award on her behalf at the Workboat Association Seawork dinner, in front of a crowd of 170 members and guests. The award was presented by Neville Metcalf, CTV Fleet Manager at Purus.
So why did Emma win? Originally nominated by her employer together with her training provider Sea Regs, Emma not only demonstrated a very high level of passion and determination during her apprenticeship but also the maturity and ability to act in challenging situations. She also brought a lot of fun to everybody learning and working alongside her.
The board of judges unanimously agreed that Emma not only showed fantastic learning achievement but she has proven an enthusiastic and essential crew member who has excelled both in her duty at work and the volunteering that she continues to do in her free time. Particularly this is supporting the organisation ‘Promoting Children in Plymouth’ - an organisation to eradicate child poverty in Plymouth and the surrounding area.
Whilst at work Emma was also key/instrumental to the emergency operation for life threatening injuries sustained by a port user who was struck by the propeller of a vessel making way – she was there and dealt with it, highly commended.
Emma showed her initiative from before day one when her private car broke down on the way to her interview, she abandoned it safely and then ran to find the nearest public transport link to get to her interview in time.
What did Emma think of her apprenticeship? “I’ve really enjoyed the last couple of years completing the Marine Workboat Apprenticeship – maintaining and servicing the moorings, as crew on the Pilot boats and tug, towage jobs and general harbour work. Thank you to all the Cattewater Harbour team for their support, knowledge and encouragement throughout, and especially as I completed the final assessment.”
Emma is also an advocate for diversity within the industry and continues to put herself out of her comfort zone to highlight the opportunities in the maritime sector to those who are unaware.
A resourceful and creative individual. Congratulations, Emma!
