“There’s generally a misconception about anchors,” says Chris Albert, General Manager at US-based Fortress Marine Anchors. “It’s not all about the weight. The design is key to enable the anchor to dig efficiently into the ground.”
Fortress Anchors should know – their range of aluminium modular anchors have been proved in multiple independent tests over the company’s 35-year history to deliver the strongest straight line holding power in the world.
Fortress Marine Anchors was created out of frustration with anchor mishaps. Founder Don Hallerberg, who had worked on the Apollo Space Mission, could not find an anchor that would safely secure hold his 92-foot yacht. So he set about designing and manufacturing one that would. Now the company is in its third generation of family ownership and located in Fort Lauderdale, claims to be the only anchor manufacturer in the Western hemisphere.
At Seawork, the company was displaying its largest aluminium anchor, the FX125 - weighing 69lbs (31 kilos) which has found a market with the large commercial catamarans used to service wind farms. “This is an area where reduced weight is vital. Having a lighter weight anchor which will hold fast in all conditions is critical,” says Albert. Other users include US Coastguard vessels and most recently, in the Gulf of Mexico, where Fortress Marine Anchors were employed to hold fast the floats cleaning up the oil spill.
