Wessex Rescue technicians were at Seawork this week to give a comprehensive water rescue demonstrations. Using specialist flood and water rescue tactics and techniques, they were assisted by multiple technologies for speed and accuracy.
The team demonstrated how an aerial drone and an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) help them search for a casualty in, or under the water. Once the casualty is located, then a small rescue craft takes over to recover the casualty onboard.
On hand was Mark Thompson from Wessex Rescue, spearheading the demonstration on the pontoons and broadcasting to the assembled crowd, updating them with everything going on.
Wessex Rescue is currently exploring the use of ROVs for life-saving operations, particularly in flood situations. It is hoped they will enhance underwater casualty detection capabilities and help bolster current operations for water-related activities which involve a dedicated drone team of five personnel, collaborating with Fire and Rescue and Dorset Police.
Ongoing testing with multiple ROV companies aims to refine techniques, providing long-term improvements for casualty rescue under varied conditions and locations.
